Mobile Apps - Vista and IMate Jamin WMDC 6 RTM Problem

Asked By Pete Z
07-Feb-07 06:33 AM
I uninstalled the WMDC and downloaded the WMDC 6 RTM version tonight and
still cannot get my PPC to be recognised by my Vista Ultimate PC

When I plug in my IMate PPC phone, I get message "installing device driver
software" then after a few seconds I get the error message "device driver
software was not installed successfully"

Clicking on the dialog to get more details, I get shown a window telling me:
device installed" Windows Mobile device: failed

Windows Update Mgr seems not to want to download the correct drivers for it.

Help please ! (btw I am running Office 2007 too)

We will probably need to see what is listed in your
\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log file to see what went wrong. If you want to
send the file, it should compress well in a zip. If you want to try to take
a look at it, start at the bottom and search up for instances of !! in the
log.

Well, it looks like this is the important part:
!!! dvi: Device not started: Device has problem: 0x0a:
CM_PROB_FAILED_START.

The portable device interface failed to load for your device which means you
cannot browse files, import photos, etc. And the WMDC UI will not see the
device as connected. Does the Activesync application on the device say that
it is connected?

Hi Gary,

Yes, it first says authenticating, then authenticated, then tapping on the
status icon (on the phone) shows me that I'm "connected"

Then Vista displays the dialog "installing device driver software" then
after a few seconds I get the error message

I realise your doing this support pro bono so any help would be appreciated.

cheers,

- Simon

My guess is that if you look in the device manager (start->Computer, right
click, manage) you'll find a portable devices node with a device under it
that has ! on it. This is the driver that needs to load no matter how you
connect (USB, Bluetooth, IR, etc) and if the device shows connected on USB,
the higher level driver is probably what isn't working.

I am having exactly the same problem with trying to connect my IPAQ HX2495.
HP says it is a Microsoft problem. Are there different drivers we should be
using? Do we just have to wait for MS to push out some new drivers?

After weeks and weeks (literally) of searching for a solution I gave up and
just clean re-installed Vista and the problems went away.

Originally I took an upgrade path (from XP pro) to get to Vista Ultimate.
Interestingly the upgrade took approx. 4.5 hours to perform - this was a clue
possibly to impending issues.

FWIW I would not recommend doing an "upgrade" from XP - just peform a clean
install of Vista from scratch. A clean install took approx 45 mins.

After the clean install I installed WMDC and my Imate syncs up with Office
2007 (Outlook) fine.

I learnt a lesson 8^)

Hi,
I agree. After working on more than one upgrade, I found that not all
incompatible apps are flagged and they cause performance and installation
problems after you upgrade. As an example, I use the Windows XP power toy
that allows you to resize pictures. This does not get flagged as
incompatible and no longer works under Vista.

I know that a fresh install is painful however it is definitely the best way
to ensure that you have the best experience with Vista.
